AI Spots 250,000 Suspicious Cancer Papers

A team led by biostatistician Adrian Barnett at the Queensland University of Technology used a special language model to scan 2.6 million cancer studies published between 1999 and 2024. The tool was trained on thousands of known fake papers from paper mills. In total, the artificial intelligence flagged over 260,000 studies for showing suspicious writing patterns. The rate of these questionable papers jumped significantly over the two decades, starting at around one percent in the early years and growing much higher over time.

This discovery highlights a growing issue in scientific research, where automated operations pump out low quality or entirely fabricated studies. Because these fake papers can pollute medical databases and mislead future research, the scientific community faces a serious challenge.
