AI Memory Demand Drives Xbox Price Hikes Ahead of GTA VI Launch
Microsoft has raised Xbox prices by up to 25 percent as booming AI memory chip demand creates a severe hardware supply squeeze.
Microsoft has raised the prices of its flagship gaming consoles, citing a massive surge in memory chip costs. The Xbox Series X now retails for $749, up $150 from its original price, while the cheaper Xbox Series S jumped 25 percent to $499. The sudden price increase comes as artificial intelligence infrastructure swallows up global chip supplies, driving up production costs for consumer electronics.
The situation stems from what researchers call a chipflation trend. Prices for short term memory chips have nearly sextupled over the past year as tech firms build out massive AI data centers. Sony took a similar step earlier this year by raising PlayStation 5 prices by $100 to $649.99. Even tech giants like Apple have had to raise prices on Macs and iPads to cover growing component costs.
Timing for these hikes could not be more critical for gamers. Rockstar Games is preparing to release Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19 exclusively for current generation consoles. With standard game editions starting at $79.99, gamers are now facing significantly higher costs to upgrade their hardware before launch day. Analysts warn that console prices might even rise further if AI memory demand stays at record levels.
