Will T. Rowe Price Finally Make Crypto Baskets Popular?

T. Rowe Price is launching a new active crypto ETF, testing whether major institutions actually want diversified baskets or just specific coins.

Crypto basket ETFs have struggled to gain traction while single asset products like those for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana have pulled in billions. Industry experts previously assumed that professional investors and advisers would prefer broad exposure to the asset class. Instead, retail investors and those with specific convictions remain the primary buyers. Investors currently seem to prefer choosing their own winners rather than trusting a fund manager to pick a basket of tokens.

There are several hurdles holding this category back. Many baskets look very similar to a simple mix of Bitcoin and Ethereum, which investors can easily replicate themselves. Additionally, the lack of a standard market index means every basket manager has to make subjective, often contentious decisions about which assets to include. When altcoins underperform, these baskets often look like a drag on a portfolio rather than a smart hedge.

Now, T. Rowe Price is entering the space with its new fund, TKNZ. This is an active ETF that allows the manager to adjust weights, hold cash, or pivot based on market conditions. With a massive footprint in retirement accounts and institutional relationships, the firm is in a unique position to prove if the previous failures were due to poor distribution or a fundamental lack of demand for diversified crypto products.

If TKNZ manages to attract significant inflows in its first few months, it might validate the theory that crypto baskets just needed the right brand behind them. If it fails to gain momentum, it may signal that institutional investors simply are not interested in broad crypto indices at all.
