Bitcoin Is Now More Stable Than the South Korean Stock Market

It sounds unusual, but Bitcoin is currently trading with less volatility than the South Korean stock market. Since the start of June, the benchmark KOSPI index has moved an average of 3.8% each day, which is more than double the 1.7% daily movement seen in Bitcoin. While Bitcoin has maintained a relatively steady range in the $60,000 area, the KOSPI has experienced violent price swings, forced trading halts, and massive margin calls.

The turbulence is largely driven by a massive concentration of capital in two AI focused companies, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. These firms account for half of the index value, and their recent price movements have been extreme. Investors piled into leveraged 2X single stock ETFs to chase the AI boom, but as those positions collapsed, the market was forced into a painful correction. The Financial Services Commission has since stopped new listings of these leveraged funds to prevent further instability.

Regulators are now working to contain the fallout after an unprecedented string of market wide circuit breakers. The Bank of Korea also recently raised interest rates to help settle the economy. While the KOSPI is still up significantly for the year overall, the recent intensity of its decline has surprised many traders.

This shift highlights how quickly a traditional stock index can turn volatile when fueled by excessive debt and concentrated exposure. Market observers will be watching to see if the new deposit requirements and trading limits can restore order to the exchange, as Bitcoin continues to exhibit much quieter price action by comparison.
